Decant Theatres & Day Case Unit

St James’ University Hospital

Bridger Carr were commissioned by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust as the Architects and Lead Designers for an exciting and essential new decant theatre and day-case facility.  The project was programmed to be fast-track, taking approximately 12 months from start to completion.

The new decant theatres, by their very nature, were required to provide flexibility to accommodate a wide range of surgeries, including robot-assisted procedures and vascular surgery, enabling the Trust to undertake essential maintenance within some of its other 55 operating facilities across its sites.

Bridger Carr were also commissioned to provide all the interior design and original artwork for the scheme, using the Trust’s direction for a therapeutic environment, we created a calming theme of natural looking materials and complimentary hues within the entrance, waiting, consultation/exam room and recovery room.  Within the clinical areas, a more clinical colour scheme was introduced including areas of colour to help way-finding and zoning.

The Trust have been absolutely delighted with the new facility, using it as a exemplar scheme throughout the Trust to show the high quality that can be achieved with good design and the right team.
