Ward Refurbishment, Lincoln Ward,

St James’ University Hospital

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHST appointed Bridger Carr as Architects and Lead designers for the reconfiguration of its Lincoln Wing wards J44 and J45. The outcome is modernised wards with en-suite facilities to all bed bays and improved bed bay spacing; an inclusive and therapeutic patient environment with modern privacy and dignity standards.

The scheme included a single storey extension that enabled the Trust to provide the optimum number of single and multi-bed bays, all with ensuite accommodation and each multi-bed bay with a patient hoist. This provides nursing staff with a choice of bed bays for patients with different care needs. The improvements have in part been possible by rationalising the facilities between the two wards to promote LEAN working by providing shared utilities, stores, pharmacy and offices resulting in significant improvements to the clinical flow and bringing the fire strategy up to current standards.

In addition Bridger Carr provided interior design services on this project, producing original artwork, signage and a feature wall colour scheme based on the Trust’s dementia colours. Working with the Corporate Planner, we were able to help secure charitable funds for additional interior design items such as wall and window art, feature ceiling lights and state of the art over bed lighting.
